James Allen Roberts was born at Kinston,
North Carolina on September 1, 1917. At the age of twenty-two,
he joined The United States Navy on December 13, 1939. He trained as an aircraft
mechanic and became certified as a Flight Engineer and Plane Captain.
His assignments were Bombing Squadron 110, Patrol Squadron 54, VP Squadron 51 and Headquarter Squadron 5-2, while stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. He was also stationed at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station, Banana River, Florida; and the Air Training Base, at Fort Pierce, Florida; He also had assignments at Newport, Rhode Island and Portsmouth, Virginia.
Aviation Machinist Mate second class James Allen Roberts was awarded the Air Medal while serving as a member of a PB4Y-1 an anti-submarine patrol in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel. The PB4Y-1 was the Navy’s version of the B-24 bomber. Other awards include the World War Two Victory Medal, the European-Middle Eastern African Ribbon, American Theater Area Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
After six years and two days, James was discharged on December 15, 1945. He continued his aviation career by serving as an aircraft mechanic for the Federal Government.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2771. He died December 5, 1985.
