Philip Miller, III was born August 31, 1756. He was the great grandson of
Jacob (Muller) Miller, a German Palatine who arrived in 1710 with Baron
Christoph von Graffenried and helped to settled New Bern, North Carolina.
Phillip married Elizabeth Nunn and settled the family plantation on Joshua's
Creek that is located on Vine Swamp Road in Lenoir County, North Carolina.
Philip served as a Private in the North Carolina Militia during the
Revolutionary War. His service is documented in various State Records of North
Carolina and Daughter of the American Revolution rosters. His land holdings were
vast, and the original land grants are located in the NC Archives in the E. L.
Miller Collection. Philip was a Methodist minister and was killed by being
thrown from his buggy as he was starting off to hold church services. He died on
December 26, 1824. Philip and wife Elizabeth are buried in the old family
cemetery of Vine Swamp Road, William A. Tilghman. Jr. honors Philip Miller, III.
